The Updated, Subversive Twelve Days of Christmas

Merry Christmas.

I wrote this updated Twelve Days of Christmas back in 2021 but liked it so much I designed a card for it this year (the illustrations and clip art were mainly free from Vecteezy). I remember being ‘inspired’ (incensed is more apt) by the felling of the Cubbington pear tree in 2020 to make way for HS2. The 250-year-old-tree was voted England’s Tree of the Year in 2015. (I’m slightly, but not much, heartened to read of it recently coming back to life.)

I dislike a lot of Christmas cards to the point of anger, many nowadays containing a nature scene instead of a religious one and featuring idyllic depictions of the countryside with friendly frollicking hedgehogs, badgers and robins et al. I mean, what a load of bollocks when we’re bulldozing fields, chopping down trees and decimating wildlife on a daily basis.
